“If you can shut that voice that was talking to you your entire life, finally you will have lived a moment of silence. It’s extremely difficult to shut down this voice. Because you know that it needs to be speaking. You have to lean away from the conversation and not engage and achieve this moment of silence. Music actually creates this. Because it is impossible for you to compose music and think of other things at the same time, in effect, you are at peace." Zoltan Bathory, Five-Finger Death Punch.

So much research indicates that music, whether listening to it or creating it, can improve our overall health and well-being enormously. A study which explored student development through songwriting (University of Vermont, USA) found that, "Songwriting appears to facilitate student development through enabling emotional stability, offering therapeutic benefits, and providing a vehicle for self-expression, self-discovery, and overcoming challenges." Well, if that's not enough for you then try this, "new research suggests expressive writing may also offer physical benefits to people battling terminal or life-threatening diseases" (American Psychological Association).

We already know songwriting and creating music improves confidence well-being because we write songs ourselves, we've done it with offenders in prisons and the results have been amazing...

"Gave me strength to understand myself." James, HMP Ranby
